# Your first character

> Create a character, select Play and understand what belongs to each slot.

**1. Create a name**

Open **Characters**. Enter a name between 2 and 24 characters and choose **Create**. Roblox filters names; choose another name if yours is rejected.

**2. Select Play**

Select **Play** beside that character. Creating a character alone does not select it.

**3. Check your starting funds**

Each new character starts as a Civilian with **\$1,000 cash**, **\$2,000 in the bank**, no items or vehicles, and two unallocated genetic points.

You have two character slots. Money, items, attributes, crafting progress, vehicles and house designs belong to the selected character. Public progression is separate from each private server's progression.

You cannot switch characters while wanted. Switching characters ends the previous character's plot access and removes their temporary world objects.
